Changing your skincare routine twice a year will transform your look and literally change your life.

I think we can all agree on our two worst nightmares when it comes to makeup:

I will leave #2 for another sess because before you can even begin to think about bomb makeup...

... you must get bomb skin on your resume!

Why You Need to Change Up Your Skin Care Routine

So first, let’s talk about why great skincare starts with a biannual change up! Reality is you live in a world with seasons, and changes in temp, humidity, sun exposure, etc., affect your skin.

Winter Weather and the Dreaded “Cake Face”

During cooler months, there is little to no humidity. Unable to grab moisture from the air, your skin can become dry and flakey. You may also find dead skin builds up on your face.

It’s that dry flakey dead skin build-up that inevitably leads to those dreaded “cakey makeup” vibes.

Other Makeup Mistakes That Cause Cake Face

Experiencing cake face in the fall, summer, or spring, and don’t feel dry skin’s the culprit?

Some other factors that could be causing your makeup to cake include:

  • Improper Layering

  • Heavy Foundation/Powder Duo

  • Bad Foundation Skin Type Pairing

Back to Basics - Exfoliate That Face Friend!

Good news...

The most common issue behind cake face - which is often overlooked - is super simple.

Your winter skincare routine is missing the holy grail of winter skincare products - an exfoliator.

The Flawless Winter Beauty Routine You’ve Been Waiting For!

Here are a few fun tips to help you achieve flawless makeup in the cold months:

1.Before applying makeup, do a 3 step cleanse (face wash, toner, moisturizer) and let your face air dry for about 10 minutes or use a face fan to speed up the drying process.

2. Let each layer of skincare and makeup fully air dry before adding an additional product (I love using fancy hand fans, as you all know).

3. Wash your face + apply moisturizer in the shower. This allows the steam to give you a mini facial, opening up your pores and soaking up that luxurious moisturizer. Plus, it helps give your face enough time to air dry before your makeup application.

4. Exfoliate 2-3x per week using this schedule to help you transition into exfoliation:

5. Update your skin serums, moisturizers, and primers to hydrating ones.

6. Switch to a full coverage foundation in the winter rather than trying to layer medium coverage to achieve the same look - less is more.

7. Use concealer after your foundation has set - before powder - to cover imperfections rather than applying additional layers of foundation. Or own those flaws and let them show through a little bit, this is very “in” right now.

8. NEVER NEVER NEVER use a regular face powder to set your makeup. Standard powders are made to be used alone and have just as much coverage as a liquid foundation. If this is in your routine, you are literally applying two layers of foundation. Instead, use a translucent face powder, which is wayyyy lighter weight.

My Favorite Skin Care Products

I have tried and worked with a ton of products in my career. Here are some of my personal faves, the ones I recommend to my VIPs!

Curology Custom Skin Care Kits

I love Curology because they create a custom kit just for you. This takes all the guesswork out of a great skincare routine! And Curology is designed for acne-prone skin - a huge plus in my book!

Embryolisse For a Fancy Face

I love Embryolisse because of its rich, luxurious hydration that feels like heaven all over your face. And it works well alone or under makeup! This formula is super rich so a little goes a very long way!

Too Face For a Fresh Glow

I love Too Faced Replenishing Face Primer because it's lightweight, super hydrating and uses really amazing ingredients like coconut water. It is perfect for all skin types + shades of skin!

Conclusion

A fresh winter look starts with a great winter skincare routine grounded in exfoliation! If you’ve added exfoliation to your winter beauty regime and are still plagued by “Cake Face” ask yourself:

  • Am I using too many layers of makeup?

  • Am I using a heavy foundation/powder combo?

  • Is it time to find a foundation that’s a better match for my skin type?
